CAR INSURANCE FOR A NEW DRIVER
- For many people driving is about choice, convenience, and for some a sense of freedom.
Driving is, however an activity which is fraught with difficulties and danger. This
applies in particular for the new or young driver, because of their inexperience
on the roads they are involved in a larger proportion of accidents and therefore
make more insurance claims than a driver who has the benefit of experience.
- Statistics released in 2008 by the association of British insurers (ABI) show that
50 collisions on UK roads every day involve someone of 18 years of age. Getting the
right tuition from a skilled driving instructor is of course key in preparing new
drivers for not only their driving test but also the rigours of the road beyond that.
Once behind the wheel, drivers should always ensure they are well protected with
suitable car insurance and finding the right policy is critical to this.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO DRIVE LEGALLY IN THE UK?
Those who wish to drive will need to be aware there are a number of legal requirements
and regulations in the UK:
- A provisional driving licence must be held to begin taking tuition. The applicant
can apply up to 3 months before their 17th birthday.
- While learning to drive a provisional licence holder must be accompanied while driving
by someone over 21 who has held a full licence for at least 3 years.
- All learner drivers must display ‘L’ plates on both the front and rear of the vehicle
(although ‘D’ plates can be used in Wales).
- Any vehicle driven must be considered as roadworthy i.e. Having a current mot certificate,
taxed and insured.
WHAT IS NEW DRIVER INSURANCE?
The price gap in premiums offered to the new or young driver and those offered to
those who will have greater experience is substantial. According to Sainsbury’s
car insurance index, the amount paid by 17-24 year olds compared to the over 40’s
is on average 3 times more. It is also known to insurers that there are inexperienced
drivers who will be highly responsible when behind the wheel. These drivers will
often be rewarded with special insurance features and discounts. Some of these are:
- 17-24 car insurance – offer policies for provisional licence holders and first time
drivers, and also offer a Pass Plus discount of up to 20%
- The aa – can offer a discount for completing the Pass Plus course of up to 35%
- Endsleigh – offer cover for provisional drivers, and can offer a 20% Pass Plus discount
and the option to earn a no-claims discount in your own name. They are also endorsed
by the national union of students.
- Norwich union – offer a bonus scheme which can allow a full years no-claims bonus
to be built up in just nine months.
- Collingwood learner driver insurance – designed to allow learners to insure themselves
in the car they are learning in for short durations of as little as a week.
CHOOSING AN INSURER
Although comprehensive cover is generally advised because of the number and type
of possible outcomes you can be covered for, serious thought should be given to third
party and third party fire and theft especially if cost is a major factor. Shop
around online with a Car Insurance comparison web site to see your options, and consider
taking more advanced courses in order to improve your skill and potentially reduce
your insurance costs. Drivers who complete the Pass Plus course can gain a reduction
in costs of up to 35% though there are also other courses to consider even beyond
this stage.
